Representatives of the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) signed today a Finance Contract worth EUR 300 million intended for financing investments by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Croatia. This is the first tranche under a total financial package worth EUR 500 million, the largest financial framework that HBOR and the EIB have agreed upon for financing this segment of the economy.

By signing this Contract, the long-standing successful cooperation between HBOR and the EIB, which has been ongoing for 25 years, has been continued. In this period, the two institutions concluded 31 contracts in the total value of almost EUR 4.5 billion, thus enabling the financing of numerous development and investment projects across Croatia. The tranche funds to be received by HBOR will be aimed at encouraging new investments, modernising the business operations, introducing new technologies, strengthening the competitiveness of companies as well as creating and preserving jobs. Financing will be available through direct loans from HBOR and through commercial banks.

Special emphasis will be placed on sustainable finance, with at least 30 percent of the funds earmarked for projects that contribute to climate goals, energy efficiency and environmental protection. This further enables entrepreneurs to invest in the green transition and sustainable business models under favourable terms and conditions of long-term financing.

“The success of the Croatian economy depends on thousands of enterprises that make investment decisions on a daily basis and create new opportunities for growth, development, and employment,” stated the EIB’s Vice-President Marko Primorac during the signing of the contract. ”Through our cooperation with HBOR, we make it easier for entrepreneurs to make these plans a reality, whether they modernise their operations, expand the production or invest in new technologies," emphasized Primorac.

”By this contract, we provide additional funds to finance Croatian entrepreneurs, thereby facilitating the realisation of their investment plans and creating new opportunities for growth, development and the strengthening of competitiveness. It is particularly important that at least 30 percent of the funds will be directed toward green projects, by which we encourage investments in energy efficiency and more sustainable business practices, and simultaneously contribute to the achievement of our strategic goals in the area of sustainable finance," pointed out Hrvoje Čuvalo, President of the Management Board of HBOR.

The signing of the contract took place in Zagreb on the eve of the conference called Places to Stay, Regions to Grow: Investing in Croatia, which is organised by the EIB Group and the Representation of the European Commission in Croatia, and which brings together representatives of the public sector, financial institutions and the economy with the aim of encouraging investment in regional development, competitiveness and  life quality.
