This year, the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR) hosts the Spring Meeting of the Berne Union, the leading international organisation that gathers state, multilateral and private insurers of export credits and investments from around the world. This multi-day event, which takes place in Dubrovnik from 12 to 16 May, brought together more than 270 representatives from almost 100 agencies and institutions, members of the Berne Union.
This year's meeting was marked by the topic of resilience, with an emphasis on the need to adapt the global financial system to new market conditions. In this context, the latest data of the Berne Union were presented, showing that in 2024, its members supported a record value of new international trade in the amount of USD 3.3 trillion, which confirms the role of export-credit insurance industry as one of the main stabilisers in challenging global conditions.
The Plenary Session was held today, as the central event of this gathering, to discuss prevailing trends and challenges in the changing environment of global trade, as well as key topics related to economic recovery, climate risks, innovation and technology, and the targeting of support, in the form of export credits, towards strengthening of supply chains.
In his opening address, the President of the Berne Union, Mr. Yuichiro Akita, emphasized that he was extremely proud to announce that in 2024, Berne Union members once again had delivered outstanding results despite a challenging global landscape. “Together, we supported record levels of trade and investment, helped business entities recover from adversity, and strengthened collaboration between private and public sectors. Our achievements reflect not only resilience but also our shared commitment to sustainable global growth. As we navigate rising risks and uncertainty, the Berne Union remains steadfast in its mission: safeguarding free trade, driving innovation, and reinforcing the foundations of global prosperity“, said Akita.
The Republic of Croatia and HBOR are hosts of such a large global gathering of export credit agencies for the first time, and the President of HBOR’s Management Board Hrvoje Čuvalo emphasized the importance of such events for a stronger positioning of Croatia on the international financial scene.
”It is a great honour for HBOR and for the Republic of Croatia to host this year’s Berne Union Spring Meeting in Dubrovnik, which is also the largest in terms of the number of participants so far. As Croatia’s national development bank, export bank and export credit insurer, HBOR is directly involved in international efforts to strengthen exports and economic resilience. Our results in 2024 show that in cooperation with international partners we can successfully respond to challenges and provide new development opportunities to Croatian exporters“, emphasized Čuvalo and added that this year’s meeting came at the time when the topic of resilience was more important than ever.
”This is an excellent opportunity to discuss the possibilities and opinions on the current market situation with some of the world’s leading export credit agencies, but also an opportunity to agree on some new concrete deals and follow the actual economic trends, all with the aim of enhancing the business environment for our exporters“, concluded Čuvalo.
It should also be mentioned that HBOR is a member of the Berne Union through active participation in the work of the Prague Club Committee, which gathers export credit agencies with a regional focus. Through this cooperation, HBOR continuously promotes Croatian exports and exchanges experiences and best practices with other institutions, thereby strengthening its role in supporting the international competitiveness of the Croatian economy.
